Very low tide this morning, - 2.5' at 8:44am (HMSC dock), walked this mile and part of Mile 221 to look for sea stars/starfish. I saw a fair number in one location, a rocky area at the south end of the mile, near the base of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (which, by the way, isn't marked as a protected area on flight maps provided by NOAA, according to a FAA investigator I spoke to recently). Some of the sea stars looked ok (to my untutored eye), some didn't. I've attached a couple of photos. My estimate was 15-17 sea stars/starfish in that area. I didn't make a real count because my & my dog's presence seemed to upset a nearby black oystercatcher--I've heard them calling to each other but this was a different sound/call, more staccato, it seemed as though we were too close to something for the bird's comfort. So I took a few photos and we left. Neither Mile 220 nor 221 are my miles, but I live nearby so walked down this beach this morning.
