A rainy day at low tide.
Report Details
A rainy day at low tide. Both creeks (Johnson on the north, Crooked on the south) were running at ankle to mid calf depth with smaller footprints than previous winters. Johnson Creek's path has moved away from the bluffs and the homes there. The vegetated foredunes have evidence of erosion from high tides and bluff drainage. There was an apparent die off of Cassin's Auklets recently with many carcasses in the high tide line. There was a lot of small plastics and styrofoam in the wrack line.

Number of people: 13. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 13. Sitting: 13.
Notable Wildlife
The usual species of shorebirds were present, including gulls, cormorants, and Black Oystercatchers. too
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 18. There were many Cassin's Auklet carcasses in the high tide line. The COASST volunteers did a count on 1/05/24 and reported 31 dead Cassin's to the COASST site. This apparent die off has also been reported to the USFWS Bandon Marsh Manager.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.).

Mile 99 is now mostly flat, without the sand dunes seen on the last survey.

Although there has been over 9 inches of rain since October 1, both creeks (Johnson and Crooked) on mile 99 are at lower than expected levels of max depth of approx 5 inches at usual crossing spots.
