Report Details
For the past two weeks (approx July 1-15) I've been walking twice a day between the D. Street trail south along the beach at Mile 325, around the bend to Little Beach over the Necanicum river estuary mud flats. The weather has been gorgeous - 65 F and sunny most afternoons after partly cloudy mornings. Please see a few photographs below of the general area. Notable sightings (see photos below) include two pairs of Bald Eagles on July 13, 2017 at the south end of the beach near the river, and a single female post-partum elk at about 7:30 am on July 14 between the D and G street trails in the dunes. This elk was reported by the City of Gearhart to have charged an off leash dog later the same day. In June of both 2015 and 2016 I encountered what I think is the same female elk while walking in the dunes south of G street. Both years she chased me and my dog off the trail - I had apparently gotten in between her and her calf. In 2015 a day after the first encounter my son spotted and photographed the calf near the same area. This year I saw her before entering the dunes, and walked my dogs away from the area.
