Report Details

Update on the whale which washed up Friday evening: It appears to be a sub-adult humpbacked whale. Its flippers measured +- 7ft so it was approximately 21 ft long. Its tail was missing. When it washed in, the stomach was hugely distended outside the mouth. After the high tide moved it south down the beach, the stomach deflated. A necropsy was scheduled for Monday the 19th but the carcass disappeared from our beach. It has since arrived at Short Sands beach.

Cove Beach south, Tillamook-Clatsop county line

We walked the mile on a clear, chilly afternoon. We picked up trash--one full bag. We found a little eel, the same color as brown rockweed! We saw sea foam blowing on the sand. We found a small skull bone. We found a scientific measuring device planted in the cobble with a float saying that it was the property of OSU.
