Report Details
Observed an adult, breeding plumage Brown Pelican standing on the rocks early this AM. After several hrs, called Wildlife Center of the North Coast. Joshua & Bradley arrived from Astoria early PM. The pelican which had not moved from the rocks for hours, was in the surf. It appeared that they had wasted their time & gas. An immature Bald Eagle was strafing the pelican. However, After another hour or so, the pelican came close enough to shore to be netted - though Joshua got quite a soaking in the process. A follow-up call from Joshua indicated that the female pelican appeared exhausted, but not injured or starving. If all goes well, she'll be released when more pelicans arrive from the south. Apparently someone else called in from Cove Beach to report one dead pelican and another one with a broken wing. Will be on the lookout for these.

We walked the mile on a clear, chilly afternoon. We picked up trash--one full bag. We found a little eel, the same color as brown rockweed! We saw sea foam blowing on the sand. We found a small skull bone. We found a scientific measuring device planted in the cobble with a float saying that it was the property of OSU.
