Mile 306 Report
Cove Beach south, Tillamook-Clatsop county line
April 11, 2016
Mile 306's main public access washed away w/in the last month.
Report Details
Mile 306's main public access washed away w/in the last month. Beach sand retreat has been enormous this winter. (Sand is visible at low tide on Mile 307.) Underlying sandstone is exposed in several spots. Downed trees from the 1700 earthquake are visible. Cliff bluffs are calving, some from direct wave action; others from too much ground water. Waves have moved the basalt cobbles away from the cliff bases so that at high tide, waves are directly hitting the cliffs. Every winter, we see sand and rock retreat, but this El Nino year has taken more out than we've ever seen.

We walked the mile on a clear, chilly afternoon. We picked up trash--one full bag. We found a little eel, the same color as brown rockweed! We saw sea foam blowing on the sand. We found a small skull bone. We found a scientific measuring device planted in the cobble with a float saying that it was the property of OSU.
