Report Details

Surprisingly few people on the beach given that Memorial Day weekend is almost here. Intrepid boogie boarders were braving the ocean's cold temperatures as a lone sand fortress stood guard. Soft foredunes are forming in the wake of the significant dune erosion from repeated severe winter storms and sand has swept up the access trails obscuring the trail posts from the beach.

Report Images

Young boogie boarders plunge into the chilly waters of spring.
Only 1 sand fort to be seen below the looming visage of Neahkahnie Mountain.
Some of the huge volume of sand that went out to sea as beach cliffs fell away in the unusually violent storms of the past winter is returning in the form of softly curving dunes.

A mild and pleasant day on Manzanita’s expansive beach. Photo 1: Runners are backlit by hazy sunshine that accents the shimmering highlights of the wet sand and low waves. Photo 2: This lion’s mane jelly measured 7” across and washed up on the beach without its tentacles but otherwise intact. Photo 3: A tiny uncarved pumpkin at water’s edge brings recent Halloween decorations to mind.
