Mile 256 Report
Kiwanda Beach, Daley Lake, Camp Winema
July 22, 2012
A cloudy Sunday evening, most people had left the beach.
Report Details
A cloudy Sunday evening, most people had left the beach. One man jogging with his dog. One woman climbing back up to Camp Winema. This is the first time I've walked this mile for CoastWatch, and I have not visited this beach for over a year. The beach appeared open, swept clean. The main high dune just to the south of where you enter the beach seemed more eroded than I remembered it. The shorter dune edge south of there and just north of Daley Creek seemed seriously eroded with vegetation loss. I saw 11 brown pelicans flying out over the ocean, and 7 gulls, I think Bonaparte's gulls. I saw one possible Killdeer in the creek, behaving as if he were distracting me from a nest. I saw one possible semipalmated sandpiper, also in the creek. The creek seem low, typical for July. There was little debris, a dozen small pieces of styrofoam. I did see an unusual float washed up, about 3 feet by 14 inches, by 14 inches, consisting of 4 panels of rubbery foam tied together with rope, with barnacles attached. There was some people caused erosion on the large dune and on the smaller dune edge.
