Report Details

A mostly nice day at the beach, other than the trash. Seeing sanderlings is always a treat.

Conditions

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Tide Level: 2.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 20. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 9. Playing in surf: 2. Sitting: 6. Other Activities: 2 people had made a bonfire; it looked to be 3’x3’ or less, and beyond 25’ from vegetation. 2 young teens/adolescents, in wetsuits, playing in the surf, never in above their knees; parents (I presume) sitting not far away..

Notable Wildlife

10 sanderlings foraging on sand/rocks; 15 scoters (wasn’t able to determine which species) floating on the surf; 1 cormorant in flight, closer than usual to the beach, but also wasn’t able to determine type. Several gulls in flight.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 1. Head was missing, so hard to identify species. All white abdomen and ventral part of wings, and all black dorsal wings. Guessing it was a common murre.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Styrofoam, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). The usual small amount of small rocks and shells. One shrimp molt. Only one water bottle; moderate amount of pieces of plastic and styrofoam. Four tied-off plastic bags of dog poop left on the walkway from the parking lot to the beach.

The beach fire close to vegetation, and somewhat close to access point was the main unusual concern to report, otherwise just the usual concern of trash.

Notable highlights: relatively small landslide at the mile's middle parking lot; large piece of shipping debris; large tree debris (unusual to see large natural or unnatural debris at this mile; the usual trash (though as usual, less than seen at miles 223 and 224 to the north); a bald eagle and barn swallows!
