Mile 211 Report
Lost Creek Wayside north, Holiday Beach south
June 11, 2020
More than 10 previously unobserved drainage pipes in places with already existing pipes.
Report Details
More than 10 previously unobserved drainage pipes in places with already existing pipes. Relatively large number of people on beach, presumably seeking respite from sheltering in place. Weather was sunny but with low fog over beach, low tide so that beach was very wide, mild temperature and little wind, so that beach was an inviting place to visit.
Conditions
Temperature: 57 F. Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: -1.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 42. Number of dogs: 9. Walking or running: 33. Playing in surf: 2. Playing in sand: 6. Fishing: 1. Other Activities: 2 people sunbathing; 2 people riding bicycles. I did not see any ATVs but saw tracks on beach that could have been made by an ATV, but given width of tracks were more likely made by state or county vehicle.
Concerns
Climbing bluffs/seastacks
Apparent violations: 2 previously unobserved instances of graffiti carved into sandstone embankment.Vehicles
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
1 dried-up fish head
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Styrofoam.
New Development
Drainage pipes. 2 new drainage pipes at top of cliff northern edge of mile 211; tangle of new drainage pipes in an area with existing drainage pipes. See photo attached.
Natural Changes
Landslides/major boulder falls. Continuing erosion of cliff face; some rocks emerging above sand that I don't recall seeing before.
Actions & Comments
Far fewer pieces of plastic debris than at time of my previous report. I picked up any I found larger than approx. one square inch, along with plastic bag and water bottle.

My last previous report was at the end of 2019, but the changes over the last year are typical of Mile 211, including rockslides or boulder falls, rockfields covering parts of the beach, and a new drainage pipe.

I tried to pick up and carry back to trash collection area all plastic pieces I found larger than 1 square inch, but for every piece I picked up there were at least 100 smaller pieces, a great increase over the amount of plastic just a few years ago.
