Mile 202 Report
North Spit Alsea River
August 2, 2020
The only known snowy plover nest this year on Mile 202 failed.
Report Details
The only known snowy plover nest this year on Mile 202 failed. Of the fourteen known plover nests located and monitored this year between Seal Rock and Patterson Memorial Recreation Site just south of Waldport, only three nests were successful, producing five chicks. At failed nest sites, eggs usually disappeared without a trace, leaving just the nest scrape in the sand. At a few failed nest sites, crow tracks were seen, crows being the primary predator of plover nests. The Mile 202 nest site just south of Bayshore Beach Club was covered with small plover tracks and larger crow tracks. With all the plover tracks, the crow tracks are hard to see but were numerous in the vicinity, and it's likely that a crow was responsible for this nest failure. Compared to other failed nests, it looks like a struggle occurred here. Three successful nests out of fourteen is a pretty dismal record, but at least the plovers are here and trying.
Conditions
Temperature: 58 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Tide Level: 4.0 feet.

Bayshore's HOA recently spent $2,500 for permits and bulldozing a path down to the beach behind the Bayshore clubhouse, a designated public access, smoothing out the drop-off resulting from winter erosion and restoring access for beach goers and our State Parks ranger's ATV.

Mile 202 beach accesses and exits are now restricted because of erosion and sheering off of the sand cliffs along its northern portion, so I now need to plan for a receding tide if I want to walk the entire mile safely.

A beautifully calm, sunny day, maybe the last for awhile, with a fifteen mile view from Seal Rock to Cape Perpetua and hardly anyone on the beach except for two surf fishers and a couple valiantly trying to launch a kite with no wind.
