Report Details

This report is primarily an addendum to the report I filed for January 20th (and before) where a rip-rap project has resumed after it was previously halted by strong storm/extremely high and rough surf.***NOTE***Edit - January 23, 2018 - Starting with image #6, these are added to this report rather than in a new report because they are the continuation of the operation to repair the rip-rap armoring. No other inspection was made of mile 199 due to stormy conditions. The plan was to get pictures of the track hoe setting the rock in place and doing the 'finishing touches' but the weather was not conducive to getting the additional pictures.

Conditions

Temperature: 49 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: 2.2 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 12. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 12. Other Activities: Continued activity including heavy equipment working the Wakonda Beach access and another track hoe with a jackhammer implement is working the rock that already exists.. People just strolling the beach and/or inspecting changes/damage from the extreme high tides

Notable Wildlife

only a few seagulls

Driftline Content

The beach is amazingly clean after the latest batch of storms. The only remaining wood are large logs and stumps either thrown against or up on the top of the bank. The rest are pushed up onto the shoulder of 101 or where Little Creek flows out onto the beach.

Man-made Modifications

Previously mentioned bank armoring work just north of Little Creek.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls, Erosion of vegetated foredune, Evidence of wave overtopping.

Actions & Comments

Contacted staff of Oregon Park and Recreation Department to find out if the armoring work is a permitted project. They stated that the original installation of rock was permitted and repairs to it are included in the original permit.

It was a gorgeous sunny day after all the rain. The barnacle log that I have been observing for months is still on the beach.

These have not been the highest waves of the storm season so far but they are still moving rock and scouring sand from the base of un-rip rapped foredune.
