Report Details
It was great to be back on Mile 182 after my disappearing summer! The sand has built into dunes this summer. I noticed many of the people walking on the beach did not head all the way to Big Creek, which is the usual pattern.
Conditions
Temperature: 55 F. Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 14. Number of dogs: 6. Walking or running: 14. Other Activities: just walking, playing with dogs. A sunday afternoon with no, to little wind, so there were a lot of people on the beach in spite of the fog most not walking too far, perhaps due the the huge build up of sand this year on the upper stretch of beach.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
small groups of Pelicans, numerous mixed gulls, juvenile and adult, a flock of migrating sandpipers. Only a small amount of sea grass and eel grass, quite a few sea palms that had been dislodged from rocks somewhere, most likely North of this beach.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. COMU, I tagged it # 710, for COASST
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). very sparse and patchy driftline
Natural Changes
Wow, what a lot of sand build up this year. I can no longer see the basalt outcropping usually present 1/4 of the way North between the Muriel Ponzler lot and Big Creek.
