Mile 179 Report
Heceta Head Lighthouse, Devils Elbow SP, Cape Creek
June 29, 2009
It was a beautiful clear morning.
Report Details
It was a beautiful clear morning. The tide was the lowest I have observed with exposed sand almost out the rocks where the nesting birds were. The Elder Hostel tour was busy photographing everything from the extreme low tide exposing sand all the way to the rocks as well as all the nesting birds and creatures in the tide pools. The two dogs were playing on the beach but seemed to be under the control of their owners. The the rocks off the point were covered in nesting gulls, Brandt's cormorants and common murres. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves immensely.
Human Activities
Number of people: 25. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 25. Photography: 20. Tidepooling: 10. Fishing: 2. There was a group of 20+ people who came by bus on a photograph tour who were very actively photographing everyting in sight. Also 2 men walking in the surf with buckets who seemed to be occasionally spearing something in the nearshore waves.

Notable Wildlife
There where were hundreds of bird on the rocks including gulls sheltering chicks, nesting Brant's cormorants with their blue breeding throat patches as well as common murres.

On the path up to the light house there was plenty of himalayan black berry as well as canary grass.
Actions & Comments
I think there should be recycling bins as the garbage cans were full of aluminum cans and plastic bottles every time I have visited. Also why are there not bags provided for dog waste?
