Mile 170 Report
South end Heceta Beach, North and South Jetty Siuslaw R
February 11, 2008
Watching new rip-rap project, wild life seems to be recovering ok.
Report Details
Watching new rip-rap project, wild life seems to be recovering ok. I saw a doe and fawn, a bald eagle and 1 adult otter and 2 new pups just south of the coast guard station.
Conditions
Cloud Cover: Sunny. Tide Level: 0.0 feet.
Human Activities
The area I walk is the north jetty and back up river a mile or so as seen on the Harbor Vista webcam. I've been angry & concerned about a rip-rap project below Shelter Cove(gated community. They buried 2 adult and 3 pup otters that I have been watching and photographing for the last half of 2007. The rest of the wildlife except for seals and sea birds had been driven away but over the weekend and today I saw a doe and fawn, a bald eagle and 1 adult otter and 2 new pups just south of the coast guard station. I'm relieved to see the wildlife coming back. This small stretch of river has been a hidden treasure for me and I would hate to see it destroyed.
Man-made Modifications
New riprap or shoreline protection structures.
