Led hike out Tahkenitch Dunes trail to beach then south along S end of mile 154 and all of mile 155 with 15 people for South Coast Striders hiking group.

Led hike out Tahkenitch Dunes trail to beach then south along S end of mile 154 and all of mile 155 with 15 people for South Coast Striders hiking group. Short earred owl was a treat to see along with carcass of Dosidicus gigas (Humboldt Squid). We hiked out on Threemile Lake trail. Beautiful day. We talked a little about the proposed marine protected area and marine reserve between Siltcoos estuary and Tahkenitch estuary. Beach was relatively clean. Popular recreational destination for hikers and overnight backpackers.

Apparent violations: ATV tracks on beach S of closure signs also on Threemile Lake trail..

Notable Wildlife
Large flocks of gulls and sanderlings. Canada Geese on creek near mouth. Short-eared owl seen near geese. Pelicans moving N along surf line.

Humboldt Squid carcass - Dosidicus gigas near mouth of Tahkenitch Creek. see pictures.

Takenitch creek and its associated estuary contained much lower water flow than in previous years with the outlet to the ocean approximately 10 feet wide and 1 foot deep (see pix).
