Oregon Dunes NRA, Tahkenitch Creek
July 15, 2012
The beach was deep and looked to be lower tide than the numbers indicate.
Report Details
The beach was deep and looked to be lower tide than the numbers indicate. Sunny beautiful day with more people on the beach than I've seen before. Also very clean, no litter or debris. The group of birds is still a mystery. We hiked in via the Threemile Lake route and walked out the Tahkenitch trail. LOTS of mosquitoes in the woods and on the south end of the beach.Tahkenitch Creek was easy to cross and warm. could have gone swimming. Still lots of erosion near the creek. The trail head leading down to the beach is a bit difficult to navigate. A buoy with a rope that leads to the beach is attached to the sign to help people navigate beach access.
Conditions
Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 1.2 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 6. Playing in surf: 1. Playing in sand: 5. 2 groups of backpackers, both groups with dogs and carrying tents and sleeping bags. One spot near the beach was a fire pit near the south end of my mile. No litter left behind.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
A large flock of birds looking about 8 to 10in with long bills curving down at the tip. Curlew or Whimbrel? They were at the edge of the shore eating what was in the sand as the water washed up. Lots of sand fleas at the waters edge. They were not going to let us get too close so it was difficult to see specific colors. But the bill was very noticeable long and curved downward at the tip. Also a flock of sandpipers
Driftline Content
very little litter and lots of broken shells
Natural Changes
Erosion of vegetated foredune, Newly exposed roots/trees falling. Most of this is occuring near the outlet of the Tahkenitch Creek.
