Report Details
8 Eugene Hikers ("Hikers") parked at Tahkenitch Campground day area and accessed the beach on Tahkenitch Dunes trail. Hikers were on Mile 154 for 2 hours. They observed 6 other people walking on beach and one dog. The ocean was flat from high tide, beach calm, weather low 60's and overcast, wind 10-15 mph and no live birds seen. Hikers did see 4 dead birds in various states of decomposition and a bird wing. Could not determine species of birds, but see photos. No evidence bird deaths caused by humans, eg, oil or rope entanglement. Hikers found bones of: a large animal, rib cages of a few smaller animals, and a partial carcass/bones of a seal, possibly. There were small rocks, shells, dried kelp/seaweed, crab shell molts, clam shells on or near the driftline. There was a little driftwood. It was noteworthy the amount of human originated litter/debris the tide washed into some of the snowy plover protected area along Mile 154. Hikers collected litter/debris that was away from this protected area.
