Oregon Dunes NRA
August 5, 2019
Miles 141 and 142 provide nice solitude and good wildlife viewing.
Report Details
Miles 141 and 142 provide nice solitude and good wildlife viewing. Noted several snowy plovers near marked nesting areas, 11 brown pelicans, a Caspian tern, along with the usual sanderlings (~75 total), Western gulls (~20 total), cormorants (7), and a few western sandpipers (7) were noted along the waterline. Two large harbor seals noted (one in mile 141 and one in mile 142) were sitting in the shallow low surf zone and appeared to be waiting fish or other morsels to come their way. They only moved when we passed close by.
Conditions
Temperature: 63 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: -0.4 feet.
Human Activities
No-one on the beach from third beach parking lot on to to Mile 141 when we began walking at 0900. There were 7 people on the beach adjacent to the parking area upon our return at noon.
Concerns
Driftline Content
Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). Trash debris was less than expected (light amount).
New Development
None
Man-made Modifications
None. Temporary signage and ropes for plover nesting areas was in place.
Natural Changes
A ledge (on avg. 2 feet high) was present between high and low tide areas. The ledge began south of the third beach parking area and continued into Mile 141 were it became more intermittent
Actions & Comments
Pleased to note that the Oregon Dunes NRA staff are managing the beach well by maintaining signage and blocked entrances to keep OHVs off the beach. Additionally, plover signs and roping are effective and maintained.

Not the best of conditions for a beach walk in July so no surprise that noone else was present.

Mile 141

This mile is typical of the Oregon Dunes beaches - grassed foredune, vegetated deflation plain, and large parabolic dunes inland.

Pleasant day, notable erosion of foredune - not unexpected after the winter and spring storms this year.

The weather was crazy; as we hiked across the two mile expanse of dunes to access our mile, the weather went from somewhat sunny to hail and wind, to rain and back to sunny.
