Mile 121 - Gregory Point, Lighthouse Beach, Mussel Reef - December 15, 2013

Report Details

Minor erosion of cliff in 2-3 places. Very good infill of sand. More folks (14) using this beach than in the past with 6 walking, 5 surfing and 3 playing in the surf. Someone cut crude steps into the path which made the going up and down slightly easier. The hillside alteration completed this summer not causing any problems so far. Not very stormy either so far. Harbor seals playing in the ocean. Shells, casings, kelp/algae, wood pieces, plastic pellets, land-based debris and Styrofoam in the driftline.

Apparent violations: none.

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Notable Wildlife

On south end there were seals jumping like dolphins in the water. I thought they were dolphins, but the surfers said no. They were having a fine old time chasing or being chased. Since the surfers did not look alarmed, I think the seals were chasing.

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Styrofoam, Wood pieces.

Natural Changes

Major cracks appearing in bluffs, Newly exposed roots/trees falling, Landslides/major boulder falls.

Actions & Comments

Still no action on the house about to fall off the cliff. Called park service in the past with no response. It will be interesting when it goes.
