Report Details

This area appeared to me to have been somewhat laid to waste by high waves along with rain which flooded the parking lots and, of course, the beach.  There were driftwood, rocks, high water and debris in the parking lots along with twenty or so hyper high school girls who, though unhappy with the rain, seemed to be having a good time.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Rain. Wind Velocity: Storm. Wind Direction: SW.

Human Activities

Number of people: 25. Walking or running: 2. Other Activities: A group of 20-25 North Bend (I think it was) high school girls dressed in cheerleader or pep club outfits were in a clump waiting for perhaps a photographer and trying to stay dry and beautiful in the wind, rain and blowing sand. Two adults walked along the edge of the parking lot. The parking lot was officially closed and had been swept over by waves which had left driftwood and other debris. The parking lot by the restrooms was entirely flooded, and the northern most area of the paved area for driving had clumps of kelp deposited on it by earlier waves. Several adults and, I think, a photographer were in the parking lot by the southern most restrooms..

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 4.

Stranded Marine Mammals

All 20 high school girls looked stranded and bedraggled and disgruntled, but hyper happy.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Wood pieces. Some driftwood and logs.

Natural Changes

Newly exposed roots/trees falling, Evidence of wave overtopping. I was only able to do a cursory walk, but I would imagine all of the natural changes above were evident if one were in the right place (which looked too close to the waves for me) to see it. I need to go back and walk this area more thoroughly.

Actions & Comments

This mile deserves better coverage than I was able to give it after having already done Bastendort beach.  I hope to get out there again soon.

Mile 120

Sunset Bay, Qochyax Island

September 4, 2022

Very busy "day at the beach"--not surprising for Sunday of Labor Day Weekend; what did surprise me was the relatively low number of out-of-state license plates.

Mile 120

Sunset Bay, Qochyax Island

January 11, 2020

Sunset Bay was overwhelmed by visitors presumably drawn by the "High Surf" warnings on their weather apps or, I suspect, by awareness of the "King Tide" phenomenon.
