Mile 116 Report
Seven Devils cliffs, Cape Arago South Cove
September 21, 2008
This visit was a few months from my last visit.
Report Details
This visit was a few months from my last visit. I found this quite helpful in observing how the piles of kelp I saw last visit are being broken down. My goal is to get to my mile much more frequently! Kelp/algae in driftline. Many hermit crabs without their shells. Duck-like birds splashing around in bay. Moderate human impact (9)-walking and tidepooling. Three dogs.
Conditions
Temperature: 70 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 9. Number of dogs: 3. Walking or running: 9. Tidepooling: 2.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Noticed a great many homeless hermit crabs. Unless I don't know a species of crab that looks like a naked hermit... Saw 7-9 buffleheads? splashing around just off the tidepool rocks. Observed a CoastWatcher that needs an identification book!
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass.
Actions & Comments
I'm working on learning fixed points for photo evidence of bluff erosion. So far, it seems to be amazingly stable. Had an absolutely fabulous day at south cove.

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
