A beautiful day out, great low tide. People were respectful of the intertidal habitat. Having the watchful eyes of several OIMB graduate students on hand was no doubt a helpful factor.

Number of people: 100. Number of dogs: 3. Tidepooling: 100. Fishing: 4. Other Activities: Main UO campus class being led by OIMB grad. students and SWOCC classes in tide pools. Others present..
Concerns
Notable Wildlife
Large number of gum boot chitons in intertidal. In one meter square saw six. Our foursome saw around 4-6 sea stars (Pisaster), one of which with wasting disease. We wondered if the increase in chiton population was due to reduced predation by Pisaster. Pigeon guillemots on near shore rocks
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.).

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
