Mile 116 Report
Seven Devils cliffs, Cape Arago South Cove
July 31, 2021
A pleasant weekend day out at the Cape brought several groups to the South Cove, despite it not being a minus tide (when I typically do my reports).
Report Details
A pleasant weekend day out at the Cape brought several groups to the South Cove, despite it not being a minus tide (when I typically do my reports). Three people fishing reported catch 3 fish each. A new water source at the base of the access trail will be monitored. We found two dead animals we couldn't identify. See picture. It was about 6 by 2 inches. An inside of a mussle, maybe?? The underside seemed to have a sort of foot. Didn't take a picture of that.

I visited the cove on my own time, and I was struck by the wrack content. I also investigated what I consider an "unsanctioned" trail, or a "surfer trail".

The day before, there was a much lower tide and I thought everyone must have come that day, because I was the only one at the start, but more people kept coming as the day wore on.

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.
