Report Details

Fairly low tide during daylight hours on a dry day brought only a few visitors. Muddy trail access inspired creative entry points. Seasonal waterfalls flowing heavily. Observed a breeding pair of Harlequins out in the surf. I believe I saw an emerged nudibranch.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SE. Tide Level: 0.7 feet.

Activities

Number of people: 15. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 15. Photography: 3. Tidepooling: 6.

Other Activities: A few of these people I only observed overlooking the beach from the trail.. I will note here that I actually started my observations at 12:39, but I finished up more about 2:00 p.m..

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 5.

Notable Wildlife

A breeding pair of Harlequin ducks dabbling in the surf. I am pretty sure I observed an "emerged" nudibranch straddling a shallow tide puddle.

Wrackline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Wood pieces, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.).

Natural Changes

Two seasonal waterfalls flowing briskly surely contributing to ongoing erosion.

Actions & Comments

I sent an email to Jesse with a picture of what I think is the emerged nudibranch asking for a professional ID, but I haven't heard back yet.

I can't resist posting a photo of the tidepools which were completely submerged during the King Tide which I last reported on.
The recent turbulent tides covered these tidepool rocks with enough sand for worms to inhabit
I saw a couple green anemones which appeared very pale. I hope they are okay. I would expect this one to have closed up more as it is out of the water, but it was responsive to my touch.
I believe this is an "emerged" nudribranch, straddling a shallow tide puddle
Happy to find Sea Stars in the cove.
I used to never see Chiton...I think I'm just better at finding them now...
I like to find limpets. This is a nice big limpet family.

I visited the cove on my own time, and I was struck by the wrack content. I also investigated what I consider an "unsanctioned" trail, or a "surfer trail".

The day before, there was a much lower tide and I thought everyone must have come that day, because I was the only one at the start, but more people kept coming as the day wore on.

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.
