Mile 116 Report
Seven Devils cliffs, Cape Arago South Cove
December 3, 2022
I returned to Mile 116 for a Sea Star Observation Survey.
Report Details
I returned to Mile 116 for a Sea Star Observation Survey. Dispite the area I had decided to check being flooded by the incoming tide, I did have another questionable find. I have sent the picture off to MARINe. I also found one dead cormorant.
Conditions
Temperature: 47 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 1.3 feet.
Human Activities
When we first got there, we were the only ones. As we were leaving a family of 2 adults and 2 kids approached, knowing the tide was coming in.
Actions & Comments
I returned to the beach to do a Sea Star Observation Survey, due to my inquiry to MARINe about the orange sea star in my last, full report. The picture was insufficient for a conclusion. I returned, trying to catch a low enough tide to closely examine all the sea stars I could find, however, the 1.3 tide had already flooded the likely areas. I did, however, find another star that could possibly be suffering the wasting disease and I am sending the new picture to MARINe today. I also found a freshly dead, "intact" cormorant on the sand part of the beach. Not at all obvious what happened to it. The incoming tide was moving it around.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
