In many years of walking this stretch of Mile 102 south of the Coquille River, I've never encountered so many Black oystercatchers gathered in one spot as they were today just west of the 8th St.

In many years of walking this stretch of Mile 102 south of the Coquille River, I've never encountered so many Black oystercatchers gathered in one spot as they were today just west of the 8th St. stairway: 15 apparent adults in the wet sand. There also were vocal groups further south, past Elephant Rock, but not as many.

A chilly NW wind didn't deter 9 folks -- 5 rock hunting, the others walking -- from hitting the South Jetty beach on an overcast morning with a low tide of 0.

The northern half of this mile was engulfed by thick fog, but still attracted two other beach goers searching for agates.
