May 23, 2012
Three people were out walking the half-mile south of the Coquille River jetty on this overcast morning.
Report Details
Three people were out walking the half-mile south of the Coquille River jetty on this overcast morning. The usual gulls were on the beach and offshore; several Whimbrels foraged in the wet sand; Black Oystercatchers were noisy on the offshore rocks close in. A mature but munched-upon dead Steller's sea lion was just north of the 8th St. stairs; it had several holes in its left back area, possibly bullets. It was a new arrival on the beach. Erosion, though not new, was evident particularly on the Madison Ave. path, which now drops several feet. Otherwise, logs and other large pieces of wood were high on the beach--some even on the large rocks closest to Madison.
