Report Details
Everyone decided to hit the beach north of the Coquille River jetty on a sunny, calm New Year's Day about 1 p.m. At least 24 people were walking or playing in the sand; only a few parking spots in the designated area and 18 vehicles. The tide was coming in but still left lots of room for people, dogs and shorebirds (flocks of sanderlings and a few gulls). Driftwood was abundant; scattered plastic and Styrofoam litter. The grassy dune area was much eroded, leaving perhaps 20 feet from the beach base to the high points of the dunes. Driftwood, small stones and shell fragments marked the tideline.
