Report Details

Commenting on the previous mile report, 1/3/23.  Thank you Erik for reporting. The big differences I see from your photos are increased rock exposure and sluffing of sand bank below the condominiums just north of the ramp. The undermining of the ramp is significantly increased since last year. Repairs from last year appear to have been cosmetic, using small rocks and sand shoved into the undermined area. Summer wind blown sand covered the area but this has apparently been removed by the increased wave activity.  Also the storm drain pipe and bank to the south appears to have receded 3-4’ exposing more pipe and creating a steep bank on the dune. Thank you for posting this report.

Mile 261

Haystack Rock, Cape Kiwanda

March 9, 2024

Wow what a change from last month! State Parking lot is closed for a couple of months while construction on the new parking lot and restroom continues. The tree ( object I show as a measure of sand deposition ) is really getting uncovered! Survey also for COASST, no beached birds or mammals found. The beach access point at the north end of Bob Straub State Park is still unusable for vehicles, due to a massive erosion event and 5 foot sharp edges to the beach.
