Oregon Shores Seeks Communications Manager
Now that our new website and database are up and running, Oregon Shores is seeking help in putting them to wider and more effective use. We have created a new, part-time position for a “Communications and Data Manager,” who will play a key role in enabling us to pursue our new communications plan.
The person we are looking for must first and foremost possess the technical skills to not just maintain but expand the website, adding features that will help us better communicate both issues and scientific background (including the data gathered by our citizen science projects) to our members and the public. This person will also assist us in making more strategic use of social media, and will advise on other technical matters. Time allowing, the communications manager will also gather and post information for the website’s calendar, and contribute to the site’s content in other ways.

Job description
This is a .6 FTE position with the following responsibilities:
- Report directly to Executive Director with matrix reporting to members of the Communications Management Team (Board members)
- Develop website capabilities as identified in the Oregon Shores Communications Plan
- Develop and coordinate ongoing efforts – some conducted by volunteers, some by Board and some by staff – to continuously and comprehensively gather information from reliable sources, including other organizations’ websites, concerning events and activities of relevance to our members and coastal citizens, and post such information on our calendar, with attribution and possibly with our own commentary. All text shall be either drafted or reviewed by the ED or an assigned member of the Communications Management Team
- Make optimal use of social media including Facebook, Instagram, etc.
- Support the ED with other communications activities such as bulletins, generating mailings, citizen science apps, PowerPoint presentations, desktop publishing for brochures, helping with the database, i.e. internal technology
- Enhance and support the data management function of the web site including members’ and CoastWatchers’ contact info, reports, financial transaction records, interests, participation, etc.
Qualifications
- Ability to add content to websites (news articles, event listings, images and videos, documents, web pages, links) using typical content management systems such as Drupal, WordPress, etc. Experience with Drupal is preferred but not required
- Necessary skills to update and manage member contact information and related data using online data systems as well as stand-alone spreadsheet and database software (Excel, etc.)
- Necessary skills to create and distribute email newsletters using typical systems such as MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc.
- Facility with standard office software for word processing, spreadsheets, and basic desktop publishing of print documents is essential. Ability to use more advanced desktop publishing software preferred.
- Ability to communicate clearly with the management team and external website programming consultants about technical issues that need attention such as adding features or tools, diagnosing and repairing technical problems or programming flaws, etc.
- Basic data management skills and experience. Good sense of how to maintain quality and consistency in a person-oriented data system such as a “customer relationship management” (CRM)
- Strong writing abilities for the web, especially clarity and conciseness
- Knowledge of (or interest in learning about) coastal conservation science and issues sufficient to help the team find, evaluate, write about, and publicize related news and events gleaned from other websites and organizations would be a major plus
