Mile 97 - Bandon SP, between Twomile Cr and Bradley Lake - December 13, 2008

Report Details

The winter high tides and storm surges are already obvious along my mile. Logs, bull kelp and displaced beach grass clumps all attest to this phenomenon. Happily, I've observed no dead marine life (other than jellies) or birds of late.Pelicans and Sanderlings are still out feeding where they may. A few Snowy Plovers show up from time to time.Otherwise, it is no longer carefree beach walking. The south winds are chill; some hail accumulates in the sand; sun is mostly a stranger. Shells, animal casings, kelp/algae, small rocks, wood pieces, plastic bags and pellets, ocean-based debris and Styrofoam in driftline. Low human impact (1)-walking.

Notable Wildlife

Several pelicans were fishing outside the breakers. Flocks of Sanderlings fed in the water line. A few Snowy Plovers foraged in the storm line.

Jellies, though not numerous, were in the tideline.

Actions & Comments

High tide levels as well as storm surges have resulted in overtopping of the dunes from roughly halfway south of the Christian Camp path to the Snowy Plover restoration area. Logs and bull kelp attest to this power of the sea.
