Report Details

Two guys with two fishing rods on ATV. I thought that beach was off limits to ATVs. Some jellies, mussel shells and crab parts. Large clumps of Bull Kelp. Two types of gulls as well as two flocks of small white shorebirds on wet sand.

Human Activities

Number of people: 5. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 3. Other Activities: 2 riding ATV. Three of us (accompanied by my dog) rowed across the New River where the Lower Fourmile Creek enters it and walked north along Mile 94 to Mile 95. Where we first came to the beach, it was sloped fairly steeply toward the water, but up at Mile 95, it was much flatter. It was warm and sunny with just a very mild breeze. There were just a few clouds visible. We saw a number of jellies, mostly small, some the size of a dime, but found one big one, the size of a baseball with lumps on it. It looked like it was clear caulk that had been extruded from a caulk gun. A few of the jellies were yellow or brown but most clear. There were a few mussel shells and even fewer parts of crabs. Up near the mouth of the New River there were lots of big pieces of driftwood but not as many as I saw there last Spring. There were masses of Bull Kelp including once I paced off at one hundred feet long. We saw a couple of flocks of little white shorebrids running in the surf. We also saw solitary large gulls with white bodies and grey wings and one gull which was somewhat smaller and colored light brown. The waves were mostly small, two feet crest to trough, but there was one about five feet tall. We saw no footprints in the sand but did see one set of ATV tracks. As we were returning, heading south, an ATV with two men on it, carrying two fishing poles, sped by at high speed. I was under the impression that except for BLM personnel, no ATVs are allowed on that beach. Although I waved, they did not acknowledge us.

Unusual number of people, saw what we took to be a family of three walking south along the west bank of the New River and a fisherman, first seen walking north, then in the water at the mouth of the New River fishing.
