Report Details

Lots of beach driftwood and rocks from high tide and rough surf. Not much trash around. The people I encountered on an ATV, not a street legal one, claimed to have handicapped permits. There are still ATV's that ride on top of the dunes. It is hardly ever possible to really see if they have a license plate or a handicapped permit unless I am down on the beach at the exact time. Most often, multiple people are riding. I think illegal ATV activity is the most common concern I have.

Conditions

Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 8.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 4. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 4. The people with the ATV claimed to have handicapped permits, one to ride, one to drive the handicapped person. Both were hopping on and off like jackrabbits, but mentioned Callum Stevenson's name as the person they got the permit from. Do handicapped ATV's have to be street legal? This one clearly was not street legal.

Concerns

Fire

Apparent violations: illegal driftwood burning evidence.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 4. ATVs/OHVs on beach, allowed: 1.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 3. Not identifiable

Driftline Content

Styrofoam, Wood pieces. small amount of plastic, and fishing lines/rope

Actions & Comments

I tore down a tower of driftwood that was obiously stacked for burning. There was burnt driftwood around. This was from much earlier in the season. The surf was wild today at high tide. Beautiful.

Hazy conditions due to smoke from wildfires in wilderness areas east of Port Orford. Juvenile snowy plover and common murre chick offshore indicate successful nesting. Bleached barnacles on rocks may indicate disease or exposure to extreme temperatures. New home construction noted at southeast end of beach.
