Report Details
I am not officially assigned to this mile, but I have starting doing the adjacent mile 50 and noticed that no reports have been filed on this mile. I toured both mile 50 and 51 by kayak on 9/1/13. This mile covers most of the shoreline of the Port Orford Heads State Park. The shoreline is largely inaccessible, except by kayak and even in a kayak there are few landing places. Mostly the shoreline is at the based major cliffs or steep bluffs. Only the little beach at the north end of the mile has occasional visitors, who primarily access the beach from Tseriadun State Park at low tide. This beach is largely self-cleaning and was free of debris today.
Conditions
Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 1. Walking or running: 1. nothing significant--one person was scrambling along rocks east of Tseriadun State Park but turned around before reaching the only real beach in this mile, which is only readily accessible from the Park at unusually low tides. There was driftwood structure in the middle of this beach that looked like it had been built by humans, although I could not be sure it was not natural. The structure features a 20-ft tall "mast," as though someone was creating a sculpture of a pirate ship. I considered disassembling it, but it was too big a job for one person. The "mast" did not budge when I pushed on it.
Notable Wildlife
harbor seals, cormorants, gulls
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. common murre
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces.
