Beach was clean despite obvious human activities and full adjacent campground.
Report Details
Beach was clean despite obvious human activities and full adjacent campground. No evidence of beach fires noted. Five dead birds apparently not related to human activities; fewer shorebirds and no marine mammals noted at this time ( brown pelicans, cormorants, osprey). Sand has moved in and covered some of the rocks at the north end of beach. Yellow abronia (yellow sand verbena) cover the sandy dunes above the shore.
Human Activities
Number of people: 26. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 10. Playing in surf: 2. Playing in sand: 13. Sitting: 1. Campground full. Obvious beach activities such as walking, driftwood fort building. No clear evidence of fire building ("no fires" signs seen about campground). Beach was very clean with no scattered trash.
Notable Wildlife
Abundant kelp and other seaweed noted at surf line. Fewer shorebirds noted (a few brown pelicans and cormorants); osprey at the north end of rocky shore.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 5. Immature gulls; one possible Canada goose.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Wood pieces.

One of the crab pots found earlier this month (previous report) was removed from the beach and is now at the trail head to the beach on Humbug Mountain State Park.

Quiet beach with no visitors; rare wildlife: single foraging black oystercatcher and a few gulls.
