During the fall quarter we have experienced some storms and there was an episode where driftwood came on the beach, but it was sparse. And a week later most of it was gone. The same can be said for kelp. On the reporting date the beach was relatively clean and free of any wildlife. As of the 8th of December there had been no erosion of the foredune, in fact there seems to be more accumulation of sand due to some high winds from the SouthWest.

Temperature: 48 F. Cloud Cover: Rain. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 8.0 feet.

Human Activities

Today was unusual, there have always been people walking the beach when we are there on Monday mornings, however today was an exception. Probably due to the rain which was heavy at times.

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces. Sludgy brown residue, normal for this time of year.

Actions & Comments

Where we access the beach the grass covered dunes stretch for a bit over 1,000 feet. For the last month or so there has been well drilling rigs drilling wells of some sort back maybe 250-500 feet from the foredune. Once dug they are capped off and marked with posts.

I am submitting this dispatch report to document the presence of the deceased Hoodwinker Mola fish that washed up on Gearhart beach on June 3rd, 2024, making local news and intriguing beach visitors who flocked to this mile by foot and by vehicle to see this unusual find.
