Report Details

There were many humans out on the beach for this usually slow time of the year. Dead birds were minimal, but still present. The wrack line was patchy and contained bull kelp, large woody debris, moon jellies, lions mane jellies, many mole crab casings, and some plastics. The intertidal at Haystack Rock was thriving with life and interpreters with HRAP were actively protecting the area. The sand is slowly being pulled back out from the beach as the winter storms have started rolling in.

Overall, Haystack Rock is a treasure trove of marine biological diversity, from invertebrates and pelagic birds to marine mammals, with an active education program for curious beach visitors. The best tidepool invertebrate diversity today was observed at the south end of Haystack Rock in the area often referred to as "The Needles. As I was tidepooling, I heard multiple beach visitors asking about sea slugs and how to locate nudibranchs.
