Actions & Comments

the City of Cannon Beach Public Works has finally installed a new sign at the Ecola Outfall pipe, and also one in the creek, which is much more visible. Too bad this happened AFTER the tourist season, and took 3 years to accomplish. the language they used is still a bit ambiguous for our taste, we would have liked to omit the word 'prolonged', and added 'may be contaminated', or 'avoid all contact'we will keep monitoring , esp. for children playing there, and go back to the city if we feel the signs don't work. Also hope that the city continues to work with Surfrider on sourcing and minimizing the contamination, whether its from birds and/or some other sources.

Mile 313

Tolovana Park north, Haystack Rock

May 25, 2024

Overall, Haystack Rock is a treasure trove of marine biological diversity, from invertebrates and pelagic birds to marine mammals, with an active education program for curious beach visitors. The best tidepool invertebrate diversity today was observed at the south end of Haystack Rock in the area often referred to as "The Needles. As I was tidepooling, I heard multiple beach visitors asking about sea slugs and how to locate nudibranchs.
