Mile 313 Report
Tolovana Park north, Haystack Rock
October 10, 2009
we do not receive any water quality report from Jennifer Ketterman's office during the winter months.
Report Details
we do not receive any water quality report from Jennifer Ketterman's office during the winter months.Charlie Plybon ( Surfrider) has made arrangements with Tim Roth at Astoria High School for having his team of science students do testing during that time. We have been trained, along with several locals from Cannon Beach, on taking samples at the Ecola Outfall, and put a 'relay' team into place to get those samples to the lab at Astoria High School.the sample on 12/7 showed a count of 2350, which is VERY high. There has not been any storm event ( = water runoff), so the city needs to keep looking for that source of contamination.Mark See from Public Works is working with Charlie. We have also included the city manager and city council on the list to be notified of results. Hopefully, this can be solved before tourist season starts in 2010. Many children play in that area, and those high ecoli counts are of great concern to us.Stay tuned.

Overall, Haystack Rock is a treasure trove of marine biological diversity, from invertebrates and pelagic birds to marine mammals, with an active education program for curious beach visitors. The best tidepool invertebrate diversity today was observed at the south end of Haystack Rock in the area often referred to as "The Needles. As I was tidepooling, I heard multiple beach visitors asking about sea slugs and how to locate nudibranchs.
