Mile 313 Report
Tolovana Park north, Haystack Rock
January 31, 2013
a pleasant day to walk our mile.
Report Details
a pleasant day to walk our mile. We picked up SOLV bags and grabbers at the city before heading out. filled 3 large bags with debris, mostly styrofoam. We participated in the Marine Debris survey some years ago, and compared what we found today: there was definitely more styrofoam than we had seen before. Some large pieces. It felt good to remove those before they could disintegrate more. Also found 2 clear lightbulbs, with Japanese writing. Wished they had been glass floats :) Used the plastic strapping we found to tie/close the bags. Deposited them in the container at the Ecola Lodge bulkhead at Gower st.

Overall, Haystack Rock is a treasure trove of marine biological diversity, from invertebrates and pelagic birds to marine mammals, with an active education program for curious beach visitors. The best tidepool invertebrate diversity today was observed at the south end of Haystack Rock in the area often referred to as "The Needles. As I was tidepooling, I heard multiple beach visitors asking about sea slugs and how to locate nudibranchs.
