Report Details

A mild morning walk on mile 311 during an outgoing tide revealed 5 species of nudibranch, 3 species of anemone, and an impressive flock of 150 surfbirds that landed in the rocky outcroppings between Jockey Cap and Silver Point. Watching these birds feed and vocalize from such a close distance was special. Small numbers of black turnstone were also present. The loud piercing call of 2 black oystercatchers was heard as well. Harlequin ducks were bobbing in the surf and resting in the tidepools. A few dogs were off-leash. A few people were walking on rocks with barnacles. Large numbers of dried up velella velella (by-the-wind-sailor) were scattered above the high tide line. Large pieces of driftwood were washed up above the rocks high on the beach.
