Report Details

Beautiful sunny day on the beach with a few pockets of snow from the storm two days ago remaining. Not too many people apart from those out for a dog walk, and a few brave souls boogie boarding in Arch cape. Errosion of the cliffs on the north end of cove beach continues. Almost all the sand on the north end has also washed out, making it impossible to walk between Arch Cape and Cove Beach.

Conditions

Temperature: 37 F. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 0.8 feet.

Activities

Number of people: 11. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 8. Playing in surf: 3.

Other Activities: Most people were out for dog walks, about half and half between those on cove beach and arch cape..

Notable Wildlife

I found one of the biggest mussels I have ever seen in the tide pools just north of the arch. Not much activity on the beach apart from a few small flocks of shore birds.

Wrackline Content

Small rocks, Shells, Wood pieces, Marine debris, Styrofoam, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). There is a tangle of what looks like black telephone wire at the north end of cove beach underneath the cliff. Few buoys, rope from fishing. Two pieces of trash from China (water bottle + tin can). The is also a very rusty propane tank washed up on the rocks on the far north end of cove beach.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls, Newly exposed roots/trees falling.

Actions & Comments

The errosion of the cliff's continues.  There is a small collection of trees that have been slipping down the hillside into the rocks for some time. They are continuing to slide further towards the ocean and somehow most of them remain upright. I could see / hear small rocks and dirt sluffing off the cliffs on the north end of cove beach. All of the sand on the north end of cove beach seems to have washed out. It is not currently possible to walk between cove beach / arch cape.

The wrack line contained small (2-4") crab casings, clam shells and broken sand dollars. There was a small land slide near a house drain line - see picture. The sand level was low on the north end of mile 307 which leaves the rocks uncovered.
