Mile 301 Report
Neahkahnie Beach north, Oswald West SP
February 6, 2024
The tide was quite low so I walked up on the rocks at the northern most end of Neahkahnie Beach. This area is always full of large marine debris from fishing boats and whatever washes in.
Report Details
The tide was quite low so I walked up on the rocks at the northern most end of Neahkahnie Beach. I could see something large and white and was curious. Surprisingly, there is a veal crate AND a truck box high up on the rocks, near the vegetation. Both are quite large - and I am guessing were swept into the ocean by the recent flooding in Tillamook? There was also a dead Harbor Seal. This area is always full of large marine debris from fishing boats and whatever washes in. There are countless crab traps, etc. I think there was also a car tire.
Conditions
Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Tide Level: 0.0 feet.
Stranded Marine Mammals
Total stranded mammals: 1. Harbor seal, north end of beach, high on rocks
Actions & Comments
I emailed the beach rangers, Brian Dodge and Eric Crum to see if we can coordinate getting these large plastic items off the rocks. The crate is white and is visible from the beach still, while the truck box is black and is not visible.
