Report Details

Mile 300 was full of people enjoying the day. It was unseasonably warm and folks were in town for the weekend early. The tide was going out and the beach was huge! The wrack line was rocky and full so broken shells, and there was a higher wrack line of velella velella that were drying out and losing their color.

Conditions

Temperature: 55 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Tide Level: 2 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 102. Number of dogs: 20. Walking or running: 89. Sitting: 10. Other Activities: 3 brave swimmers!. It was a lovely early spring Friday! Felt warmer than the 55 degrees and the people were out for it. Low wind made it even nicer. Lots more people on the beach than a typical weekday, in preparation for a nice weekend. There were even three brave souls playing in the water!

Notable Wildlife

Nothing out of the ordinary. Not a lot of birds on this day, either. A few crows and a couple of gulls.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Wood pieces, Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). Velella Velella, small bits of wood, lots of broken shells and small rocks. Typical amounts of plastic that wash up, too.

New Development

Bluff development. The bluffs are still steep from winter storms and the dune grass roots are exposed. Folks are still making new user trails to get down to the beach. At post 21 (the northern end of mile 300) the beach entry has a steep ledge still.

Mile 300

Manzanita Beach, Manzanita, Neahkahnie Beach

A sunny Saturday morning in Manzanita! The upside down tree that is at 45. The strangest thing I found were the two adult common murres - one with a string tied to its wing.

Manzanita Beach, Manzanita, Neahkahnie Beach

January 6, 2024

More than 30 mid-sized, dead birds of what looked like the same species and one sea gull and one crow. Not too much sea plastic - I picked up some of it. Large burnt stumps and logs were rolling around in the high tide. Farther south, the ocean has removed the dune and some of the paths end in a sand cliff now.
