Report Details

Walked from bay to beach on roadway that accesses the property on which development has been previously noted. Goat pen had been moved to midway point of parcel between bay and beach but was no longer in use - no goats present, fences bent and breached. No evidence of recent use of roadway or picnic area just east of the foredune. Participated in SOLVE beach clean-up - noted a bit more styrofoam than in the past, but did not find anything recognizably Japanese; overall, picked up less trash than last fall. Between July and September someone else had thoroughly cleaned out all campsites on mile 287, removing tarps, lines, and other garbage. Of note, on north end of spit saw vehicle tire tracks from the jetty access road ending approx 1 mile south. Remains of a large campfire and considerable left behind picnic/oysterbake refuse were located where vehicle had parked on beach.

Met two bow hunters in parking lot returning from an unsuccessful early morning elk hunt; saw tracks of large elk herd on beach. Our combined efforts left the beach remarkably clean from mile 287 north to the end of the spit.

Mile 287

Bayocean Peninsula north of Bayocean site 2

March 17, 2024

The cloudy marine layer that was present when we first arrived eventually burned off, providing us with a pleasant but breezy sunny afternoon for our visit. 1) We encountered an intact hull of a fiberglass boat on the mid-section of the mile; photos and location information was provided to the State Park Ranger so it could be retrieved from the beach. 2) There had been a massive influx of velella velella (by-the-wind sailors) washed ashore several days before our visit. 3) Given the number of folks in the parking area when we arrived, we had expected to see more folks on mile 287 but encountered just a typical number of visitors. 4) There was more detritus on the beach than we've seen in recent previous visits.
