Cape Lookout
August 27, 2023
There is an illgal ladder near the tip of the cape, south side.
Report Details
There is an illgal ladder near the tip of the cape, south side. The sea stars are now very plentiful. There seems to be a lack of sea lions at the tip, though its now been this way for the last decade,
Conditions
Temperature: 63 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 4.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 1. Kayaking: 1. Other Activities: Just me, kayaking.
Notable Wildlife
Pelicans, gulls, cormorants, one sea lion swimming (there use to be many on the rocks at the tip and in the large shallow cave also at the tip of the cape), very numerous sea stars, a few western grebes, a loon.
Man-made Modifications
Illegal ladder. I reported it on mi 270, but should be on this mile. At least 3 years ago someone put a wooden ladder 50 to 75 ft up from the water just off the southern tip of the cape. I've reported it several times to Park staff and was told that it is illegal as far as the ranking ranger knows. It would take someone with climbing/rope skills to remove safely. A prime ledge, near this ladder, used by common murres for nesting has been abandoned since the ladder's placement.
Actions & Comments
I have reported this ladder to a ranger.

Many gulls, and a few miscillaneous birds, most notably a pair of peregrine falcons (one dive-bombing a smaller one until the small one dropped the bird it had).
