Report Details

At least one cormorant and one common murre were found in a weakened state and taken to a local "bird" man, Harry Dodson (who the Oregon aquarium suggested I call), for help. Though the cormorant didn't live to make it off the beach. Note: Oct. 11-12, ten - 14 dead common murres were seen washed up at the high tide line, in a range N and S of SW 35th Street, Lincoln City beach access.

Notable Wildlife

On Sept 13, a sick or tired cormorant came ashore just below Beach Ave beach access and let people and dogs walk within 6 feet of it. I attempted to capture it (with a towel thrown over it) to take it to Harry Dodson to feed and care for it, but it waddled back into the surf. A week later, on Sept 20, it or another sick/hungry cormorant, at the same location, let a women come within a foot. I warned her it was needing help and called Harry again. Harry later told me it died as he was carrying it off the beach. A day later on Sept 21, a live but very weak common murre was huddled on the beach with its eyes closed. It let me pick it up in a towel and drive it to Harry's house in a a box. He could tell it was wet, cold and hungry when he felt its empty stomach area.

This was the first sunny and warm day of spring, and lots of visitors filled the beach; almost like a summer day! Significant sand erosion had recently occurred and many logs have been moved higher onto the beach.
