Mile 239 Report
Salishan Spit north, Siletz Bay
October 15, 2017
Very pleasant day.
Report Details
Very pleasant day. Picked up a small amount of trash. Relayed our concerns about the dead sea lions to the ranger but he indicated he may not take any action since it is very expensive to get a large piece of machinery out onto the beach to bury the animal ... and then wave action may expose it again.
Conditions
Temperature: 59 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 4.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 6. Playing in surf: 6. Counted about 120 people on the Taft side of the Siletz River mouth; also 4 dogs and 2 horses with riders.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Some type of sandpiper or plover; gulls including juveniles. No harbor seals in their usual hang-out at the end of the Salishan Spit but we spotted 30-40 on a sandbar in the middle of Siletz Bay.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 2.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). Dead sea lion just south of mile 239. There were 3 more further south. Reported to ranger; he did not seem too concerned. Attributed deaths to possibly a virus.

Not a bad fall day for a walk with our out-of-town visitors, but walking the beach was impossible due to the high tide and big waves, which were reaching the beach grass area and bouncing large pieces of driftwood around.
