Report Details

Lovely sunny day at the beach. More people walking, playing, surfing than I expected. Absence of colored plastic bits from driftline noted, as is significant or noticeable erosion of top strata of bluff at south end of mile. Clean beach. Observed what looked like several groups of pelicans flying grossly parallel to beach, far offshore.

Concerns

Apparent violations: none observed.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 11. RVs/Buses parking: 2.

Notable Wildlife

lots of sea weed in driftline, small to medium clumps of sea grass & sea palms.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass. sea palms

Natural Changes

continued erosion of clearly layered bluff at south end of mile

Actions & Comments

I was surprised to see how much erosion was ongoing at the bluff at the south end of my mile. It's been eroding steadily for years, but there seemed to be evidence (talus/sediment slopes piled up on a ledge about 1/3 of height of bluff (measuring from top of bluff) of recent significant or noticeable erosion. Don't know if it's wind based, due to gravity (controlling factor), or due to the recent rains. Two driftlines visible, one much higher than the other. Very clean beach. Did not see any of the colored plastic bits that have formed a significant part of the driftline for a number of years--result of greatly decreased shipping? Nice day to be at the beach.

Low tide at Yaquina Bay was listed as 12:16 pm today, the north jetty & a headland, and probably about 8-10 miles separate YB from the beach at Otter Rock where my mile is located, I don't know how much those factors change (or not) the exact tide level when I stepped onto the beach this morning OR when I left, about noon. Overall a beautiful day on the beach, on my arrival there were probably 23 people (including surfers) on the beach, that number increased to the number I entered.

Nice day for a walk on the beach, clean beach, saw 6 cyclists (one solo, I think the rest were more or less together), first time I've seen cyclists on this beach, have seen them off & on from the south jetty north to Lucky Gap access.
